How to Read the Solar System Remaining Life Section
Understand what Solar System Remaining Life means on a Solar Inspection Report, including why an inverter can show 0 years while the system still produces at full capacity.

You will read the Solar System Remaining Life section of a Solar Inspection Report and explain it to a customer, including why an inverter can show 0 years while the system is still producing.
Steps
- Find the Solar System Remaining Life row on the report summary. It shows a score, a grade from A to F, and a page reference. This section estimates how much life is left in the equipment, separate from how much energy it is producing today.
- Read the Remaining Life card for the two equipment types. It lists Solar Panels and Solar Inverter as separate numbers (see screenshot). In the example, the panels show 40 years at 80 percent and the inverter shows 0 years at 0 percent. These are two different components, so read them independently.
- Interpret the panel number. Panels are long-lived. A 25 year figure is tied to the warranty, not the actual lifespan. Field data shows systems producing at high capacity well past that, so a high remaining life on panels means the panels are expected to keep working for a long time.
- Interpret the inverter number. String inverters typically last around 10 years, so an inverter that reads 0 years has passed its expected life. This does not mean it is broken or useless. It means it has exceeded its expected life and is running until the wheels fall off. The homeowner should keep an eye on production, because an inverter past its expected life can stop producing at capacity or fail without warning.
- Cross-check against the Solar Energy Production section. If Remaining Life on the inverter is low but Production is high, the system is still doing its job today. Production tells you what is happening now. Remaining Life tells you what to plan for.
Tip: Point customers to this article when they flag a 0 year inverter as a discrepancy. Past expected life is a planning note, not a defect finding.
Common mistakes
- Reading a 0 year inverter as "the system failed." A 0 year inverter still paired with strong production means the equipment has exceeded its expected life but is still working. Watch production over time and budget for an eventual inverter replacement.
- Assuming old panels need replacing. A high panel remaining life means the opposite. Anyone telling a homeowner to swap panels for age alone is usually selling something.
What happens next
With Remaining Life understood, the customer can plan for an eventual inverter swap and keep an eye on production, rather than treating the number as a reason to replace working equipment.
